Today is my Dad’s 60th birthday, so if you think of it, say a prayer for him that he has a good day 🙂
This week I had the opportunity to hear a social worker (she works for the ND/MN Alzheimer’s Association) give a talk on Alzheimer’s Disease. One of my grandmother’s had this awful disease, so listening to her presentation stirred quite the mix of emotions of memories. Something that I learned, though, that almost brought me to tears (good ones!) was the following list which highlights the skills that are retained with Alzheimer’s Disease:
For the sake of time, I’ll leave it at this list (look for a follow-up on this presentation next week), but I was so happy to see that music and sense of humor are both skills retained with the onset of this emotionally draining disease.
Writing number two made me think of this adorable video (old couple playing piano!) I saw a few weeks ago. Check it out!
My roommate and I decided to get rid of our cable and DVR (the company kept increasing our prices without notice!), so I am very thankful that the gym where I work out has cardio machines with TV’s, so I can still watch “The Voice” live. When I watched it this week, I literally had to force myself to not raise-the-roof and scream when my favorite two artists’ (Caroline Pennell and Matthew Schuler) names were called first. I also had to suppress a ‘whoop, whoop’ when Carson announced that Will Champlin advanced to the next round (his performance last week was one of my favorites). I’m looking forward to seeing who America chooses as “The Voice!”
The dietitian inside of me got really excited this week at the grocery store when I discovered a wrap that contains a whopping 26 grams of fiber…unheard of! I was somewhat concerned as to what kind of effects this would have on my stomach (hello, that’s a day’s worth of fiber), but no major concerns – MAJOR CONCERNS, if you’re a HIMYM fan, you might have caught my attempt at a joke- thus far.
The nutrition breakdown is as follows in case anyone is curious about my shameless plug for the Mission Carb Balance Burrito: 1 tortilla= 210 calories, 5 grams total fat (2.5 saturated, 0 trans, 2 poly, 0.5 mono), 510 mg sodium (not thaaaat stellar unfortunately), 32 grams total carb, and 9 grams protein. My biggest letdown with the wrap, though, is that its first two ingredients listed are water and modified food starch and then FINALLY followed by whole wheat flour. I’ve been throwing veggies, hummus, and cheese on these tasty wraps for quick snacks and meals. Yay for finding new foods!
I still can’t believe that Thanksgiving is just a few short weeks away. Every year I always say I’m going to do a better job of making an effort to think of what/who I’m thankful for and to let it be made known, so I’m going to try that again this year 🙂
With Thanksgiving just a few short weeks away that also means that…semester break is just a few short weeks away too! I’m pretty excited for break because 1) I won’t have homework for a few weeks 2) I won’t have to work for ~1.5 weeks and 3) I get to spend a few days in California visiting a friend. I’m definitely looking forward to having some time to relax and to not work on homework!
Are you doing anything out of the ordinary this weekend? If so, let me know, I’d love to hear about it! Happy Friday!
